113 international investigators conducted the largest non-European diabetes genetic study with 433,540 individuals from China, Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and USA. The research team identified 61 novel genetic variants linked with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, including genes associated with higher belly fat levels in East Asians. Some of these genes are thought to possibly explain why East Asians get type 2 diabetes even with a lower Body Mass Index (BMI). Genetic variants from close-by genes in different tissues were also found to impact the prognosis of type 2 diabetes. The researchers now hope to determine which genes are impacted by these novel genetic variants and use this information for new targeted diabetes treatments and drugs.
