In a cross-sectional study1 published on July 24th, 2019, researchers found that clinical research projects that are focused on Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between 1992 and 2018 comprised just 0.17% of the NIH’s total budget. Of 5460 records in their search criteria, 529 clinical research projects were focused on AA/NHPI. Though funding has increased for AA/NHPI projects over time due to increased NIH budget, the proportion allocated from the NIH budget has only marginally increased from 0.12% before 2000 to 0.18% after 2000. The results of this study calls into question health disparities that AA/NHPI face. The researchers of the study recommends efforts to increase both research funding for underrepresented populations and diversity in the biomedical workforce.
